A soul-soothing river-side destination
Perched at a height of 1819 mts from the sea level in the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh lays Barot, a beautiful hilly hamlet on the Chauhar Valley, better known as Barot Valley. Barot is situated just 40kms from Jogindernagar and 66 kms from Mandi on the Pathankot-Mandi highway on the banks of the river Uhl with the imposing Dhauladhar ranges of the Himalayas. With a cluster of small house, a few shops, eateries, medical shops and a cooperative bank away from the hustle and bustle of the crowd, unmarked by any signboards of hotels and restaurants and untapped by regular tourist flock, this small mountainous valley is a piece of heaven to the travelers who search for peace in the nature.
The road from Jogindernagar branches off at Ghatasni on the Jogindernagar -Mandi highway and from here it is just 25kms to reach Barot. Previously there was a Haulage trolley connecting Jogindernagar to Barot reducing the distance to 12kms. The route includes terraced fields and thick cedar forests, rising to Jhatingri at the hilltop. The remains of the summer palace of the former rulers of Mandi are located here.
Things to do
There are a range of summer outdoor activities in Barot including trout fishing, river side camping and trekking through the forests. Elsewhere you can simply sit beside the river or walk silently through the nearby woods passing the Uhl river barrage and reservoir and spend a couple of days on the lap of the nature at Barot. This barrage, constructed for the Shanan Power House in the nearby town of Jogindernagar, is right at the centre of Barot.
Barot also forms the gateway to the Nargu Wildlife Sanctuary which lies across the Uhl. The sanctuary is home to the monal, black bear and ghoral. Through woods of cedar and pine a trek route cuts across the sanctuary to Kullu.
Summers are very pleasant while in winters there is snowfall and then it is extremely chilly.
Where to stay
There are some homestays in Barot providing comfortable stay and delicious food along with the elegantly built PWD bungalow.
